Slavery and Higher CriticismEven the heathen recognize what modern "enlightened" Christians refuse to admit: "Slavery was sanctioned and carefully regulated by many passages in the Bible... Until the advent of higher criticism of the Bible, many, if not most, Christians would have agreed with Jefferson Davis' concept that slavery 'was established by decree of Almighty God'.... There are no passages in the Bible which plainly condemn or criticize the institution of slavery. There are no verses which clearly denounce slave owners." So, when a Christian takes it upon himself to denounce slavery as an "abomination" and slave-holders as "sinners," he is, in fact, attacking God Himself and placing his own reason above the clear testimony of His Word (so clear that an unbeliever can see it).
